10 Dad Rules of Kitchen Safety That Aren’t Paranoia

The physical danger points of hot grease, falling knives, thermal glass shock, and toddler boundaries during active cooking.

THE 10 NON-NEGOTIABLE RULESSPECIMEN // 01–10
01KNIFE SAFETY

A falling knife has no handle.

If a knife slips off the counter, step back and let it hit the floor. Never try to catch it with your hands or feet.

02STEAM BURN

Never grab a hot pan with a damp towel.

Moisture inside a damp towel conducts heat instantly, creating an immediate steam blister on your palm. Use dry oven mitts only.

03HANDLE PLACEMENT

Turn all pot handles inward toward the back of the stove.

Prevents passing hips or curious toddler hands from snagging handles and tipping boiling liquids onto the floor.

04FIRE SAFETY

Never pour water on a grease fire.

Water instantly vaporizes into steam, throwing aerosolized burning oil into an explosive kitchen fireball. Smother with a metal lid or baking soda.

05SHARP KNIVES

A dull knife is 10x more dangerous than a sharp knife.

Dull blades slip off slick vegetable skins and require heavy downward force that slips directly into fingers.

06CROSS CONTAMINATION

Store raw poultry on the absolute lowest shelf of the fridge.

If raw packaging leaks, bacteria cannot drip down onto produce, dairy, or cooked leftovers below.

07OIL IGNITION

Never walk away from a preheating pan of oil.

Cooking oil goes from shimmering to smoking to spontaneous auto-ignition in under 90 seconds.

08BOARD STABILITY

Anchor every cutting board before chopping.

A wobbly cutting board causes the blade to slip sideways off food and into knuckles. Always use a damp cloth underneath.

09THERMAL SHOCK

Never place hot glass Pyrex pans on cold granite or in water.

Rapid thermal shock shatters tempered glass into thousands of razor-sharp flying shards. Place hot glass on a wooden board or trivet.

10KID BOUNDARY

Enforce the "Hot Triangle" boundary for kids and pets.

Establish a strict rule that the space between the stove, sink, and prep station is a no-running, no-toy zone during active cooking.
